System Introduction
Nowadays, Point of Sale (POS) terminals can be seen in every supermarket, and they are widely used for transaction processing and recording in retail and service industries. It is expectable that they will be more frequently used for the real-time reporting of sales and inventory data. This can simplify supply chain, promote self-service transactions and lower costs.

 

The POS terminal has evolved from its first generation through second generation (Electronic Cash Register) to currently its third generation with complete and diversified functions and intelligence. The third generation POS terminal has an open system and can be used with multiple platforms and application software. It supports a variety of peripherals as well as IC card and bank card enabled terminals. It can work independently, be networked, or connected to the Internet. With the rapid growth of the POS industry, the prices of POS terminals with high performance are largely accepted by merchants. In addition, aware of the important role of information system in fierce competition, merchants are increasing demands for POS terminals, which can greatly reduce the labor of cashiers, improve efficiency and bring convenience to consumers.

 

There are several key features of POS applications: First, POS terminals are required to work frequently for a long time with minimum malfunctions, on a daily basis. This needs high stability. Second, they are used in harsh environments with heavy dust pollution, so a good dustproof performance is required. Third, they are used in those places with great people flow, where they are vulnerable to collision and vibration. Besides, some stores are not air-conditioned in summer, so water may splash onto POS terminals. Therefore, POS terminals shall be resistant to dust, vibration, extreme temperatures and water. These are what ordinary PCs simply can not do.

 

Structure of the POS terminal
How to quickly build a reliable POS terminal? The Embedded Intelligent Platform (EIP) for POS terminal is the best answer. A POS terminal usually comprises two parts. One is the regular VGA display for cashier, and the other is LED or VFD/LCM display that shows the customer the amount of payment/change. The information displayed is simple and it usually adopts serial port communication mode. The cashbox of the POS terminal is equipped with an ejection mechanism driven via digital input/output interface. A barcode scanner is used to scan the barcodes on merchandises and transmit the information to the host computer via serial port. Besides, as most stores accept bank cards, a bank card reader is required. The reader also communicates with the host computer via serial port.
